What you will learn

You’ll develop strong foundations in both traditional and modern barbering, including:

  • Sectioning patterns
  • Classic and contemporary cutting
  • Scissor-over-comb and clipper-over-comb techniques
  • Clipper work and detailing
  • Beard and moustache trimming
  • Straight razor shaving
    Finishing and styling

You’ll also build the skills that make a great barber:

  • Client care and consultation
  • Shampoo and basin services
  • Scheduling and time management
  • Employability skills
  • Developing and retaining a client base

What you will get

You’ll graduate ready to work in a professional barbershop or salon, with real client experience and practical confidence.

Training is delivered in a simulated barbershop environment, where the majority of your learning is hands-on. You’ll be guided by experienced educators who understand what the industry expects and how to help you meet it.

Class schedule

The Certificate III in Barbering includes 800 nominal hours and can be completed over:

  • 12 months (three days per week)
  • 9 months (four days per week)
  • 7 months (five days per week)

From 2025, new full-time students attend three days per week (Monday, Thursday and Friday), unless otherwise arranged.

Classes run from 9:45 am to 5 pm.

Funding

Skills First funding is available to eligible students.

As of 1 January 2023, upskilling is no longer an eligibility requirement. This means students do not need to enrol in progressively higher qualifications to access Skills First funding.

Eligibility limits still apply, including:

  1. Two skill sets per year
  2. Two AQF qualifications per year
  3. Two courses at one time
